One of the things I am trying to do is collect as much info from my scene when I shoot the picture. That includes focal length of the camera at the time of the shot. My camera gives me this in a text file
FOCAL LENGTH : f8.2mm(X1.0)
How can I translate that into field of view for my virtual camera?

I don't know if I can help but i think that you need of camera FOV relate to a "24x36" standard camera.
If your camera is a digital one, find in manuals which "24x36" focal lenght is equivalent to your f8.2mm.
For example my lens camera have a range of 5.8-17.4 mm equivalent to 38-115 mm of a 24x36 standard camera.

Hi Mike,
Love to hear someone hunting down all the set data (the makings of a great final product!).
The calculation of FOV can be pretty complex and takes into account film back/ccd size, focal length, etc...
There are auto FOV calculators already preprogrammed out there such as:
http://www.deepsea.com/lensfield.html
And many 3D applications can self-calculate based on the input of the other data... with the aperature height (film or ccd size)lens/focal length used, applications such as Lightwave will automatically calculate and adjust for the FOV.
Best of luck,
Jon

thanks for the site jon. however after toying with it a little i've
noticed that it depends heavily on the size of the "video format". is there a common size for digital cameras?
regular cameras?
