Creating a realistic water surface is more complicated than just using a water texture. If you are after a realistic result you should really use raytracing, both for reflections and refractions. Also, a falloff map for the reflectivity helps a lot.

sorry for the super dumb question :)

I guess you're using EI? If you are I cant help you, sorry.
But maybe Alex and his team at dvg can make a tutorial about it in a near future?

yah ei.

i have tried playin with the raytracing in the shadow box etc and all it does is make light leek through EVERYTHING :)

i kinda lose most of the realism :) and i cant see any diffo in quality.

Hey alex! :) you gonna go into this in depth sometime? :)
(or did i miss the tutorial on the cd? :)

Got some funky effects using plane old rays. check the "Look at me" forum :)

"raytracing in the shadow box" hmm, that sounds more like raytraced shadows than a raytraced material to me..

This link is for water tutorials. The software is Animation:Master but the techniques should apply. Note: Ray tracing is a must.

There's tons of tuts at 3dny, and if I recall well at least 3 of them about ocean surfaces...you have to register first (its free)

hope that helps

check out rustboy:

http://www.rustboy.com/rustweb.htm

Look under "Movies" and clip 4.

Now, this is not a tutorial, but is a great depiction of water. Of course, it is also at night, which makes it easier. But still, the author gives a description of how it was made.

the 3dtk does not have the ability to render out as raytraced. The raytraced shadow feature turns off the shadows you think of, like the shadow behind you as you walk around out side etc.
