hi,

i would like to get into this "render in passes" thing. in cinema 4d it's easy, you hit the render button and you get 50 layers of your immage... (and for me it is not evident, which layers are useful and which are too much.)

in 3d tool kit i could render wich the flags in seperately, but how do i get an occlusion pass which seems to be pretty helpfoul for reflecting surfaces.

as far as i did work in 3d i allways set up my scene, did my lighting and rendered. is it correct, that i have to set up different lighting situations or materials in order to get certain passes?

Occlusion is not really doable in the 3D Toolkit.

You don't really need to change the lighting...just different surface settings.

ok,

there is a tutorial on the dvGarage page in which you explain how to composite this silver surface ("the silver top")...
can you explain how to render all neccessary passes?

thanx

If you check out the book After effects in production. Alex's work was featured on one of the chapters addressing rendering in passes. and if I remember it was trying to composite a 3d image with a live scene.

Anyway going over it myself, I got pretty confused and still do not understand how it works. I am not sure if its our not being very knowledgable about photoshop or AE.

I think it would be nice if Alex could go im more detail on the subject. The lab flask is probably the easiest example and many of us still donot get it. To me this is technique is probably one of the most important elements of F/X. what good is it to be able to model out of your nose when you can not make it look as realistic as possible.

I have a couple of thoughts. DVG is probably going to come out with a complete rendering in passes type of toolkit in the future. my opinion is that they should start in now if they have not started workong on it. This will most likely be a very popular toolkit.

Alex, you should have a wishlist section in the forum for future products or stuff to add to the tutorial link, you might get a lot of great ideas. send my commision check in the mail
